  • What Are The Best 2-7 Triple Draw Poker Hands?

27 lowball handsThe most common mistake for most players new to 2-7 Triple Draw is that they forget straights and flushes count against them and that Aces are always high, never low. In Razz, for instance, 5-4-3-2-A of any suit is the very best hand, but in 2-7 Triple Draw it’s one of the worst, especially if it’s suited. The best hand in 2-7 Triple Draw is 7-5-4-3-2 unsuited. So, it bears repeating that Aces are always high and straights and flushes count against you… a straight flush in 2-7 Triple Draw, no matter how low the rank, is a complete disaster. This article will teach you the basic concepts of 27 Triple Draw hand selection.

Starting Hands In 27 Triple Draw

First I want to mention that you should make sure you are playing "27" Triple Draw instead of "A5". There are two versions of Triple Draw so getting them mixed up can be a costly mistake. As a general rule, you probably don’t want to play any hand that isn’t holding a deuce, or at the very most a 3, as the low card. The last thing you want is to have to draw to the bottom of your hand. On the high end, a 7 is optimal but an 8 will often do well depending on what’s underneath it. You also want to make sure you break up any straight or flush possibilities, as demonstrated in the following example:

If you’re holding Kh-6s-5s-4s-3s, it would be a good idea to not only discard the King but the 5 as well. In this hand you’re holding four to a straight AND four to a flush… both of which count against you. If you discard just the King, the only cards you can draw to are a non-spade 8 or 9, and even if you happen to hit one of these six outs you’re still left with a mediocre hand at best. You can’t draw a 7 or a deuce because either would give you a straight and you’d very likely lose, and any spade will probably kill your hand no matter how low it is. Discarding both the King and the 5 dramatically reduces your chances of catching a flush AND opens up the option of drawing a 2 or a 7 without hitting a straight.

    Drawing In Later Rounds

If you’re dealt Q-7-5-4-2 unsuited, you have a very strong 27 Triple Draw starting hand from just about any position. There risk of a straight is pretty low, you’re drawing to the nuts (with a 3) and there are several other outs that you can win with (a 6 or an 8). You’re going to play it, obviously, but you have to watch it carefully as the rounds progress. If you’re still drawing by the last round and facing heavy betting, that strong one-card draw you started with has fewer and fewer chances of hitting the winning card combination. In other words, with every drawing round your hand is getting weaker and weaker, your opponents will know you have to hit one magic card to win and they’ll make you pay to catch it.

Drawing In 27 Triple Draw Lowball

There is no magic number defining the “right” number of cards to draw, but there are a couple of good rules-of-thumb to live by: 1) The earlier your position, the fewer cards you want to draw and 2): You want to be drawing fewer and fewer cards (or no cards) on each drawing round from any position. This makes your starting hand selection both extremely important and extremely easy; from the first position you’d better be holding 2-3 low / 7-8 high, no straight or flush draws and a maximum of one discard, preferably none. If you’re not, just fold it… it’s that simple. The later your position, the more you can speculate with questionable hands and draw more cards. But since there are far fewer winning hand combinations in 2-7 Triple Draw than in most other poker games, you still want to choose your battles very carefully.
