Complete Guide To A-5 Triple Draw Lowball
A5 Triple Draw is a variation of its more common cousin 27 Triple Draw. This game is much more common offline than it is online. Like all Triple Draw poker games, A-5 Triple Draw is part of the "Five Card Draw" poker family. To sum it up in one sentence A5 Triple Draw is five card draw lowball with 3 draws and straights and flushes don't count. Its a little more complicated than that though so I have added links to our rules and strategy articles. The number of players that play A5 Triple Draw online is pretty small right now. There is hope for this game in the future though. Since Pokerstars started offer 27 Triple and Single Draw the traffic at the tables has grown steadily. If Pokerstars or any other major online poker room for that matter were to offer A5 Triple Draw I am confident it would be just as successful as 27 Triple Draw. Once upon a time you could play A5 Triple Draw at one of the larger poker rooms but ended up merging with another poker room and the game was discontinued. That was a huge blow to the A5 Lowball community but it wasn't the death blow. One online poker room continues to carry the torch for A5 Triple Draw players. Aced Poker offers it in fixed and pot limit formats. The downside is that Aced Poker is a relatively small poker room so the traffic for this game is pretty much non-existent. A5 Triple Draw History & Live Play
Ace To Five Lowball is more popular as a tournament game than a cash game. You can play for cash at many brick and mortar casinos and poker rooms though. A5 has an extensive history with the World Series of Poker* as well. In the 2nd WSOP in 1971, A-5 Draw was one of the 5 events played that year. Granted it was single draw as apposed to triple draw but you get the point.Despite it's popularity in years past, especially amongst professional players, there has not been an A5 Single or Triple Draw tournament at the WSOP in several years. Instead they seem to be favoring the 2-7 version. The differences between the two games are very small though so it likely doesn't matter much to Triple Draw poker enthusiasts.
A5 Triple Draw In 2009 & Beyond
As I mentioned above the world of poker seems to prefer the 2 to 7 Triple Draw version so this game may be on its final leg. On the internet a-5 Triple Draw is close to extinction but there is always hope. All it would take to keep this game alive is for one of the large rooms to add it to their game lineup. Its sad to think that what used to be the premier lowball poker game in the world will be nothing more than a memory to a select few poker players.
If the worst comes to pass for this remarkable game at least it won't be completely forgotten. This web site will continue to provide readers with A5 Triple Draw rules and strategy. Perhaps one day in the future A-5 will escape the shadow of 2-7 and become the leading Triple Draw version. It wouldn't be the first time a poker game has come back from the grave.
